Are you visiting Lindau for the first time and have around 48 hours? Then we have for you our 2-day plan, with which you get to know the island city best. In addition to the historical sights of the city, we will show you many more of Lindau and Lake Constance. You will be thrilled!
Day 1: Enjoy the island city
Start the first day with a relaxed tour of Lindau Island and see the sights and historic buildings. From April to October, public tours of the city are offered every Tuesday and Friday. In summer additionally also on weekends. If you are unable to attend a guided tour on the days of your stay, we recommend our tour guide. It gives you an orientation guide and describes the top sights of the island.
After the tour, you can fortify yourself with a typical Bavarian meal in a cozy restaurant near Maximilianstraße or on the harbor promenade before continuing your exploration by bike. Steeped in history and belonging to the island is the Gasthaus zum Sünfzen. The Gasthaus Stift or the Bier- und Weinstube Engel also have hearty Bavarian dishes on the menu.
If you don’t have a bike with you, rent one. On the island, you can rent a bike at Unger Fahrrad, the Rad-Insel or online with just explore Bodensee and start the panoramic bike tour directly. The tour has a length of 25.6 km and leads along the shore of Lake Constance from Lindau via Wasserburg and Nonnenhorn into the Lindau hinterland to Bodolz. Along the way, 7 vantage points with loungers invite you to relax at various stops. If you manage the 253 meters in altitude, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Lake Constance and the surrounding area.
Back from the tour, you should look for a restaurant for dinner around 6:00 p.m. at the latest, before marveling at the dancing puppets of the Lindau Marionette Opera on the stage of the city theater in the evening. If there is no performance that evening, we suggest a visit to the Lindau Casino Bayerische Spielbank. Maybe you will be lucky in the game? In any case, you will be rewarded – with a unique view of the lake and the neighboring countries.

In the morning you go directly by ship from Lindau to Bregenz. Once docked there, you can reach the valley station of the Pfänder mountain railroad from Bregenz harbor in five minutes on foot. If you want it sporty, you can also manage the way up to the summit on foot. If you want to do it comfortably, use the Pfänderbahn and arrive on the mountain in just a few minutes.
Once at the top, you will be rewarded with a view of Lake Constance and the surrounding area and can meet dwarf goats, ibexes, marmots and pot-bellied pigs in the Alpenwildpark. A well-developed network of paths invites you to take a 1 ½ hour round trip over the Pfänderspitze, on to Moosegg and Sorgen back to the mountain station. Of course, you can also cover longer distances. Arriving back in Bregenz, before taking the boat back to Lindau, it is worthwhile to visit our Austrian neighbors and take a short tour of the historic town of Bregenz.
A visit to Lindau would be unthinkable without stopping at a traditional Lindau wine tavern or “Rädle“. In addition to home-produced wine or cider, a Rädle, a farm or estate tavern, also offers a hearty snack in a cozy atmosphere. There are three Rädle in Lindau: The “Schönauer Rädle” in Kellereiweg 30 and “Das Degelstein” in Schachener Straße 213 and the Rädle of the Haug winery in Schönau. If the Rädle are closed, we recommend the wine tavern “Zur Fischerin” in Ludwigstraße 50 or the small Vinothek in Ludwigstraße at Reichsplatz on the island.
